Mission Statement

At Charlesglen Toyota, we pride ourselves on being a family-run business. Since we opened our doors in 1988, we have hung our reputation on three words: Fairness, Trust, and Integrity. These words are our guiding principles in the way we conduct business every day.

Our slogan is "We treat you like family", and we feel this saying sums up how we do business as a company, and we think this makes us different from other dealerships.

Dealership History

Starting out on the lube rack at Fleming Motors in Lethbridge, Alberta; 16 year old Glen Richardson could only dream he would one day open a dealership of his own that would be one of the largest state of the art Toyota Dealerships in Canada.

Richardson, a born and raised Southern Albertan, remembers growing up in the small town of Nanton, Alberta where automobiles were a part of his life as far back as he can remember."My Dad, Laurence and his brothers Bill and George had a garage in Vulcan, so I was always around cars." Richardson said "In those days, I think I was even driving them at 12!" (In fact, one of Richardson's favorite stories revolves around driving the family to the car wash and being pulled over by policeman when he could barely see over the steering wheel.)

Richardson's lifelong passion for the automobile has been the centre of his professional career taking him from the Service Department, where he became the youngest Service Manager in Canada at Fleming Motors at the age of 18, to selling cars for Stampede Pontiac and Jack Carter Chev Olds and then managing their sales departments. He became a partner in the Used Car Chalet on McLeod Trail and later founded 5 Star Motor Homes, opened 5th Avenue Autohaus a Volkswagen Dealership and then Airdrie Pontiac Buick. Richardson partnered with Gordon and Glen Rumpel to open Charlesglen Toyota in the spring of 1988 where he eventually won the prestigious Dealer of Excellence Award from the Canadian Automobile Association in 1999.

"I will always be grateful to my friends the Rumpels for giving me my start in the Toyota Business. Being involved with the Toyota product has been a joy and the highlight of my career. I am proud to be affiliated with a high quality manufacturer."

Richardson says he is excited to now showcase the new Scion brand, introduced to Canada last year, as he sees it as real opportunity to engage the more unconventional client who wants something different but insists on quality. Having a strong work ethic is vital to anyone's success and Richardson is proud of his drive saying "There were weeks when I thought I should just put a bed in my office. It's a demanding business. For me running the dealership with integrity has always been my  main priority and to do that you have to be the example to your staff. It takes time to make sure everyone, both customers and staff, are being treated fairly."

This theme carries over into his personal life as he has been a member of the Calgary South Rotary Club since 1977 and held its Presidency in 2001. "We get to make a difference all over the world. I know I have been very blessed with a great family life and strong business so I feel it is only right that I spend some time giving back," Richardson said adding that this year marked he and wife Jeanette's 50^th anniversary! "2011 is a big year for me. I get to open the store of my dreams and celebrate half a century with the woman of my dreams!"

Over the past 23 years Charlesglen Toyota Scion has a history of supporting local  community sports teams which has evolved to incorporating the Charlesglen Community Conference Centre into its new facility. "We have a 1,400 square foot conference equipped with a flat screen TV, Smart board, custom designed modular desks that can be arrange to seat 25 people with a total room capacity of 150. " Richardson said adding "Knowing that we as a company would not be using it on a regular basis, we wanted to open it up to surrounding communities who can book it in advance for board meetings, training sessions or anything else that may help them make a positive impact . Volunteerism is huge in North West Calgary and we wanted to help by sharing our space and offering its use for free."

A close family relationship has always been important to Richardson and oldest son, Todd has been handling the daily operations of Charlesglen Toyota Scion for the past ten years as General Manager. "It will be great to have the space to do what we have always wanted to do for our customers. After outgrowing our Crowfoot location, we started planning for our new facility 6 years ago so this move is long time coming!

Despite the constraints of their somewhat small current location, the Charlesglen Toyota Scion staff has been appreciated by their customers by being honored with the Calgary Herald Readers Choice Award for Best Import Dealer in Calgary for 6 consecutive years."We have one family of customers who have purchased 20 cars from us over the years. Now that's customer loyalty!" said Tim Beach, General Sales Manager and Charlesglen Toyota team member for over 20 years who recently become a partner in the business.

In addition to the new Charlesglen Toyota Scion, Todd and Glen Richardson along with partner Glen Rumpel are opening up Lexus West, the second Lexus store in Calgary in spring of 2013."We are building the Lexus store just across the street from our new location so our customers can easily shop between the two stores. Many of our clients are so happy with the product they have multiple Toyotas and Lexus' so it will be easy for them when deciding to upgrade or buy something new," said Todd who will continue in his position of General Manager at Charlesglen Toyota Scion until becoming Dealer Principal of Lexus West upon its opening.When completed there will be 10 import Dealers in the North West Auto Mall.Its easy access from all quadrants of the city via the Stoney Trail thoroughfare makes it a prime destination for anyone in market to buy a new vehicle or service their existing one.

Glen Richardson is confident that Charlesglen Toyota Scion customers will be excited about the new dealership saying "People might initially come to see the building, but they will come back because of the people." Richardson thanked his staff by saying "Everyone has been working really hard for months to prepare for this move without compromising their excellent customer service. We are happy to reward them with an efficient, comfortable new workspace to help facilitate their professional potential. Without them, none of this would be possible."
