2016 Toyota Mirai Wins World Green Car Award
Even though we aren't currently selling the Toyota Mirai, that doesn't change the fact that it's one of the most innovative alternative-fuel automobiles the industry has seen in quite some time. It is so innovative and respected, in fact, that it recently was named the 2016 World Green Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show late last month, and here at Charlesglen Toyota we can certainly hope that the infrastructure for hydrogen fueling stations expands this way soon so we too can take advantage of so fascinating an automobile.
The Mirai, for those who are unfamiliar, runs on hydrogen fuel cells rather than gasoline, which is important because when hydrogen is used it emits only water vapor rather than carbon dioxide. It doesn't take a scientist to know that water doesn't hurt the environment one iota, which is what makes hydrogen so intriguing as an alternative fuel source moving forward and why Toyota is so proud to have won this accolade.
"Just as Prius changed the world nearly 20 years ago, the hydrogen-powered Mirai is ready to make history," said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. "With a range of over 300 miles per tank, a refueling time of under five minutes, and emissions that consist only of water vapor, Mirai is leading the world forward toward a more sustainable future."
Currently, the Mirai is only available Toyota dealers in select states in the U.S., as the infrastructure for hydrogen fueling stations is only just starting to proliferate. While any new or certified pre-owned Toyota model would do wonders for its owner in terms of efficiency, we like the idea behind the Mirai and certainly hope it finds its way north in due time.
